Day tripSantorini day boat from Heraklion
Heraklion10–12 hours
A day trip from Heraklion to Santorini is a ferry there and back with a few hours on the island between. You will see Fira or Oia briefly and you will spend more time on the boat and in ports than the brochure implies. It is a taster, not a Santorini holiday. Missing the return ferry is an overnight you did not plan. Wind in the strait delays boats. The usual length is 10–12 hours, and the months that usually work are April to October. It suits people who accept a long marine day for a short look. Skip it if this is your only full day in Crete. Knossos will teach you more about where you actually are. Ferries use Heraklion port. Book the return before you leave the Cretan side, and do not plan a tight flight the same evening.

What to know before you book
What the day is
A morning departure from Heraklion, a few hours in Fira or Oia, and a return the same evening. Some days go by ferry, some by a short flight. Either way the island is a window, not a stay.
How long it takes
The crossing is the day. Ferry time depends on the ship; the flight is short and still needs airport time at both ends. From Chania or Rethymno, add the road to Heraklion before any of that.
Best season
Ferries are most frequent in summer. The caldera is crowded then. Shoulder months have fewer boats and an easier walk in Oia. Winter day trips are a poor bet.
How to choose
Book it if Santorini is a wish and you will not otherwise go. Skip it if you want a swim, a gorge, or a calm day before a flight. An overnight on Santorini is the version that is actually a visit.
FAQ
Questions.
- You can, and you should not. The road to Heraklion is already a couple of hours before the ferry. Move the night to Heraklion or drop the idea.
- The flight gives you more hours on the island and less of the sea. The ferry is the simpler bag-free day if the sailing times line up with a return. Compare the day’s actual timetable on the booking page.
- Ferries delay and cancel. Do not book this for the day before an international flight.
