Which part of Crete is best for first-time visitors?
Chania and Rethymno in the west combine Venetian old towns with the famous west-coast beaches, Balos and Elafonissi. Heraklion is the base for Knossos and the Archaeological Museum, and Lasithi in the east suits a quieter or more luxurious trip around Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.
How many days do I need in Crete?
Seven days is enough for one or two regions. To cross the whole island from Chania to Sitia, plan ten to fourteen days and allow two to three full days per region. Crete is 260 km long and the mountain roads are slow, so do not try to see it all from one hotel.
When is the best time to visit Crete?
Late May to June and September to mid-October give warm sea, open gorges, fewer crowds and lower prices. July and August are the busiest months, with daytime temperatures of 30 to 35°C. The Samaria Gorge is open from early May to late October.
How do I get to Crete from Athens?
Overnight ferries leave Piraeus for Heraklion and for Chania (Souda) and take about nine hours; a daytime service to Heraklion runs in summer. Flights from Athens take 45 to 50 minutes to Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ), and both airports have direct summer flights from most of Europe.
Do I need a car in Crete?
For beaches, gorges and mountain villages, yes. KTEL buses link the north-coast towns every hour or so, but Balos, Elafonissi, Preveli and the south coast are slow or impossible by bus. Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos are the best bases without a car.
Which region has the best beaches?
Chania has the headline beaches: Balos, Elafonissi and Falassarna. Rethymno has Preveli and the long town beach, Heraklion has Matala and the resort beaches at Stalis and Agia Pelagia, and Lasithi has Vai palm beach and the quiet coves around Elounda and Ierapetra.
Is Crete expensive?
Budget travellers manage on 60 to 90 euros a day using rooms, tavernas and buses. A mid-range trip with a hired car, a good hotel and dinners out runs 120 to 200 euros a day. Elounda’s five-star resorts start above 300 euros a night in summer.
